Friday5 – Learning
How and when did you learn to swim?
I think I learned to dog paddle the old fashioned way – throw ‘er in, sink or swim. My mother did put me in swimming lessons for two weeks every summer, and I stayed at my aunt and uncle’s place 45 minutes away. I loved the time there, and all, but it always seemed like she was getting rid of me for that time – I could have taken lessons locally for the same price. Umm, unless my aunt and uncle paid for them – which wouldn’t surprise me.
Still though, it was nice learning in a pool… ;)
How and when did you learn to drive?
On my grandfather’s lap at five. Later on, he let me drive his car…and miraculously appeared on every street corner while I was taking my test. Literally – the instructor made a comment about it! After I had my license, gramps let me use his old car to go tooling around in. Loved that car – I still have the trunk key, even though the car itself is long gone, having been used as a test vehicle for the first jaws of life in the area.
How and when did you learn to tie your shoelaces?
I knew that before kindergarten, and I have no idea. My grandmother probably taught me.
How and when did you learn to cook?
Grandma, mostly. Trial and error once I was on my own.
How and when did you learn to type?
Trial and error, mostly, two fingered pecking on an ancient, green Underwood in my grandparent’s office. Graduated to a smaller portable later on, then to an electric or two, and then finally to the keyboard. It wasn’t until college in ‘04 that I was tested for speed, and I’m quite proud of my 75 per minute.
